Nunu

nullSometimes bonds of friendship become stronger than even bonds of blood. When those bonds link a fearless boy to a fearsome Yeti, the bond becomes a force to be reckoned with. Given the responsibility of taming a terrifying beast, Nunu forged a friendship where others would have forged chains. Now Nunu and his burly pal Willump are an inseparable pair who combine youthful exuberance and brute strength with the mythical powers of the Yeti to overcome obstacles insurmountable to any ordinary duo.

Nunu had only the vaguest memories of his parents or the time before he was part of the reclusive Frostguard tribe. Never welcome among his caretakers, Nunus wanderlust and compassion often put him at odds with the tribes elders and the boy frequently dreamt of places far beyond the shadow of the Frostguard citadel. Sometimes he would do more than just dream, much to the frustration of his minders. This was never more apparent than when Nunu was apprenticed to the tribes beastmaster and charged with the care of the creatures under his yoke.

The Frostguard held a menagerie of the Freljords wildlife at their beck and call, but unique among their collection was the Yeti: an uncommon creature with mystical qualities and raw physical strength. The beastmaster taught Nunu that it was only a lean diet of plants and regular whippings that kept the vicious beast tame, but the more time Nunu spent caring for the creature, the more he learned that the Yeti was no feral monster.

As he saw his new friend Willump growing weaker and sicker, Nunu began to sneak the Yeti scraps of meat, hoping to restore his health. Day by day, Willump grew stronger and not the slightest bit savage – contrary to the beastmasters claims. Nunu had hopes of convincing him that the Yeti posed no danger, but it wasnt meant to be. The next time Nunu came to deliver Willump a meal, he found the Yetis cage shattered, with only a crude drawing inside signaling the Yetis farewell. Without hesitation, Nunu rushed into the wilderness in search of his friend.

When Nunu finally caught up to Willump, he found the Yeti cornered by the beastmaster alongside a group of Frostguard warriors. Afraid that the men would hurt his friend, Nunu threw himself between the Yeti and the beastmasters lash, but the brutal man would not stay his hand. As the furious beastmaster raised his whip once more, the Yeti swelled up with uncharacteristic fury. Even after so much mistreatment, it wasnt concern for himself but for the boy whod shown him kindness that finally pushed Willump too far. The Yeti raged and left the man bloodied in the snow.

Terrified by Willumps fury, the remaining Frostguard warriors fled. Nunu realized there was no going back. He yelled at Willump to run before the men returned to kill him, but the Yeti refused to leave the young boy. Nunu was faced with a hard choice: abandon his sole friend and lead a life of captivity with the Frostguard, or strike out into the harsh wilds and leave behind the only home he knew. Nunu chose the only path that made sense. Leaping onto the back of the mighty Yeti, Nunu joined Willump in his great escape. The pair took their first steps into the wide world from which they had been kept for so long.

Willump and I have a whole world to explore. Dont get in our way!

Sasquatch Nunu

null
A re-colour couldn’t be any simpler than this: it’s the same exact sketch but painted differently. The background is largely absent and the depiction is adequate but to a point. The stance shows most of Willump and Nunu and the colours are alright. However, the boy seems to be on the yeti’s shoulder rather than hanging from a bag on his back. Besides, most of the yeti’s body isn’t clearly shown. Overall, it gets the job done but just that.
If the splash art was as simple a re-colour as it could be then the actual model doesn’t disappoint: same model but different colour for the textures. The result could be considered a more classic yeti look but, as with most mythological creatures, descriptions are based more on imagination than fact. If you like the colour scheme then it may be worth getting but it’s as basic and unsurprising a skin as it can be.

Workshop Nunu

null
Mostly blue shades and snowflakes, the background hints at a snowed forest but doesn’t elaborate on the setting. It looks a bit like filler and it may well be. Nunu and Willump don’t look much better either: they seem like a shot of the three-dimensional model with some shading added over. The general look is rather rough and doesn’t really stand out in terms of quality. On the whole, it’s a passable splash art that does its job but seems to be outdated.
Workshop Nunu is direct and unimaginative in its approach to Christmas. Willump is crudely outfitted in a Santa suit and Nunu hides behind his hat with only the aforementioned as an addition. The concept is realized and the reference clear but the result is more a quick solution than an elaborate or clever concoction. Collector’s and avid Nunu fans will probably value this skin but there are much better exponents of the Christmas spirit available.

Grungy Nunu

nullA blurry junkyard is the setting but the piles all look the same and become undetermined heaps of grey. Nunu and Willump appear in front of such scenery: one practically greeting the viewer and the other enthralled in a fit of munching. The portrayal manages a reference to Sesame Street but only in passing. The lines and shading are actually quite rough and the impression is that of a draft. It’s an acceptable splash art and the style may fit the concept but still feels disappointing.
This trash-based skin has to carry a concept that is hardly attractive. Thus, it depends on how it is developed and implemented to consider its eventual appeal. In this case, Grungy Nunu chooses a Sesame Street reference that is rather clear: Nunu and Willump become Oscar the Grouch and the Cookie Monster, respectively. If you are a fan of the Muppets there’s little doubt that this skin offers an interesting adaptation. However, for those on whom the reference is lost only a couple of eccentric junkyard dwellers with peculiar ice powers will they find.

Nunu Bot

null
Nothing is sacred when a patch of black would do to fill the background. Such is the case of this laboratory where Nunu Bot is being worked upon. The crude machines are unbelievable and the inexact displays hardly demonstrate advanced technology. The same can be said about Nunu and Willump as the former is barely visible and the latter seems made of wood and tin; with a fitting bronze coat. The problem is the sketchy shading and careless lines that don’t exhibit the precise and careful design proper of an advanced machine. The piece serves its purpose to a point but a legendary skin is deserving of much more than this.
Nunu Bot surely has a good model that exhibits a retro robot style that is rather peculiar and attractive. The application of a combustion engine generator to power the pair is evident which coupled with the lights and decoration place Nunu Bot closer to a unit used for production than one for the end consumer. This places it in a unique spot as it distances itself from the Battlecast line and offers a different take on the automata concept.
Unfortunately, the skin doesn’t complement the model well. The new voice-over is largely a collection of naive jokes and references that break the fourth wall and become more annoying than funny. On top of this, the only new particles added are too minor. Therefore, no real connection is established between an electricity powered bot and its ice based abilities.
In the end, Nunu Bot has a distinct style that makes it stand on its own. However, the voice-over can be grating and the lack of further significant additions let down.

Demolisher Nunu

null
The turbid background is for the most part just a thick fog. Only a few soldiers are visible in the foreground, as well as some weapons on the left side, but in general one can guess at a battle but be completely unable to glimpse any details. Nunu appears quite lively atop Willump: both show reliable armour that has seen its share of abuse yet that can only be said about their upper bodies. Additionally, the left side of Willump dissolves too much on the fog, his right arm seems detached from the body and the helmet appears rather small as if his face protruded from it at any chance. In fact, the soldiers in the front look more clearly depicted despite being secondary in relevance to them. It could be said that the thick fog adds an air of mystery yet it also abruptly devours large parts of the action. As a splash art it’s certainly interesting but could’ve showed more while keeping the heavy fog in check.
Demolisher Nunu takes a significant departure from the yeti’s usual comical style and adapts him into an armoured simian. Conversely, Nunu doesn’t stray far, only donning some armour, but he matches Willump’s style well. The armour is evidently sturdy and centred on function over form. The riveted plates appear heavily marked by their use but seem able to resist much more that they already have. Regardless, the armour tends to look a bit clumsily adapted and flatly conceived. Besides, Willump’s ape features may not be as well received by all Nunu fans. In the end, it’s a rather nice skin that shows a unique battle-centred look that is quite attractive. The adaptation seems uninspired in the armour and too liberal in the features but certainly has its charms.

TPA Nunu

null
The background suggests a big arena where the audience clamours for the champions. At least the lights of such incredible place are visible because the rest is just the imagination working. The champions are clearly portrayed though, but their simultaneous exposition makes them compete for attention.
Regardless, they manage to convey a bit of their personality in the depiction: Mundo is brutal and towering, Orianna vaguely humane, Ezreal overconfident, Shen sneaky while Nunu and Willump display their close teamwork. In parts they seem to be escaping from the diffuse maws of the background but the portrayals are correct anyway.
All in all, it’s a nice splash art that displays a team of champions celebrating the fruit of their labour. While it’s unclear in certain parts each champion has its place. Nevertheless, it’s a piece that seems better suited for a presentation of the full set of TPA champions than to be used in individual spotlights.
Nunu might be considered the central figure but the one that steals the show this time is Willump. In fact, Nunu simply dons some casual clothing and a headset so he barely looks anything out of the ordinary. It’s Willump in the image of the TPA mascot that provides all the appeal the skin has to offer. The mascot’s design is easily transferred onto Willump but the underlying yeti features become noticeable remnants: his physiognomy at large but also his hands and feet mostly. While the mascot does display irregular and rough features the grotesque appendages and blubbery belly make a stark contrast with the otherwise clean style of the rest of the body; only interrupted by the spiked bands.
Even though the necessity to keep a measure of Willump’s yeti nature is understandable the elements don’t mesh well nor seem appealing. The result is that of a funny and comical monster that looks like a furry and cute creature with a forced bestial facet. A simian aesthetic could’ve been planned but it doesn’t feel fluidly implemented. On top of that, the unaltered Absolute Zero seems like a wasted opportunity to further integrate the TPA logo into the skin. Nevertheless, the skin certainly has a unique style and that is its saving grace. TPA Nunu looks good enough and if you don’t mind a yeti wearing a mascot’s fur then this is a choice to keep in mind.

Zombie Nunu

null
In the distance, explosions destroy what the zombies haven’t. The red fumes cover most of what remains but one can guess that there isn’t much to see. At least that’s the idea, because the background is notable for its poor quality with regards to the simple and dull depiction of the setting. The foreground is, fortunately, the complete opposite. Here we find the zombie slayers enjoying their job against the hordes of the undead. The stains on their clothes and bodies show that they like the get quite involved in the activity. However, they are being flanked by an unusual enemy. In this area, the context is not only clearer but also more meaningful. While the zombie horde is suggested more than shown their presence is clear. The only exception to the emptiness of the background is the presence of a certain legendary undead that has his flames ready to join the battle; if he can stagger there on time. The vertical stripe on the left of Jinx and Pantheon’s splash art also catches the eye but isn’t as evocative.
Without a doubt the portrayal of the champions at combat is the central part of the piece. Their portrayal exhibits a magnificent use of colour and light that manages an attractive display. Their combat poses don’t compete with the need to allow a clear view and their expressions are reminiscent of their joy. Even the regular zombie on the corner of the foreground displays quite a bit of detail. Each surface and texture is meticulously drawn and shaded with the correct use of depth of field effects; which adds to the portrayal. It’s only when certain elements move towards the background, like Pantheon’s jetpack, that they become sketchy. For the most part, each champion has their place and their personality is eloquently presented. So, between Jinx’s dementia, Pantheon’s blood lust, Nunu’s derangement and Willump’s ferocity there’s much to appreciate.
Ultimately, it is an uneven splash art. The background, though clearly secondary in importance, is plain and uninteresting. In stark contrast, the foreground takes the reins of the whole piece and presents a battle for survival that shows the best that each champion has to offer. In consequence, this is a great portrayal backed by a disappointingly presented setting.
The first thing that comes to mind when looking at Zombie Nunu is that it’s an eye-catching, even interesting, skin but, despite that, it’s not exactly what would be called appealing. The repulsive aesthetic is well presented, very effectively indeed, but it’s something that can feel undesirable. It’s also as much a reference to Frankenstein’s monster as to a zombie because the monster would technically qualify as such. That being said, the monstrous style is finely realised and consistently implemented across all areas of the skin. Thanks to a varied selection of changes Zombie Nunu is quite close to a legendary skin and it shows. The skin modifies almost every aspect of the duo and splatters the theme effectively on them. On top of that, it doesn’t forget to add some fitting touches like Willump’s drooling or a new running animation evoking the classic zombie walk.
The goo particles follow the style displayed by the model: they catch the eye with their disgusting appearance yet at the same time can induce one to avert the eyes. The trail left by Blood Boil is attractive but seems out of place with regards to the goo-base. The sounds complement the idea without being particularly prominent or special. Regardless, the new grunt and gibberish voice-over furthers the theme and allows it to be more convincing. The few new animations can be as unremarkable as Consume’s or as perfectly chosen as Blood Boil’s. One thing that seems uneven is Absolute Zero; what ought to be their finest moment. The bloating animation is a great addition but the actual explosion of goo and other unmentionable elements looks weak and lacking any impact.
All things considered, Zombie Nunu is a skin that shows a lot of effort and a willingness to go beyond usual expectations to make a satisfying product. Such dedication shows in the implementation which is full of additions to better present the theme. The concept may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Being so well realised the repugnant nature of the zombified duo is evident. Additionally, not all changes are as effective as they could be and Absolute Zero should certainly explode with an impressive display. The good, ultimately, defeats the flaws and for fans of monsters Zombie Nunu is a recommended skin; provided they can stomach it.
